Did you know -- The Baldwin House – also known as the Loammi Baldwin Mansion – which was built in 1661 by Henry Baldwin, one of the first settlers of Woburn. In 1803, his great grandson, noted Engineer Col Loammi Baldwin, greatly enlarged the house to its current form. This younger Baldwin was known as the Father of American Civil Engineering created the Middlesex Canal and lent his name to the famous Baldwin Apple. Colonel Baldwin in 1774 enlisted in a regiment and commanded the Woburn Militia at the Battle of Lexington and Concord.

Did you know -- The Middlesex Canal was a 27 mile barge canal conneMiddlesex Canalcting the Merrimack River with the port of Boston. This Canal was one of the first civil engineering projects of its type in the United States. The use of hydraulic cement to mortar the locks is the first known use of the material in North America. 

Did you know -- The 1790 House – also known as The Joseph Bartlett House/Bartlett-Wheeler House was a Federal style house built in 1790 on the banks of the Middlesex Canal for Lawyer Joseph Bartlett. Before its completion it was purchased by Col. Loammi Baldwin, hoping to convince scientist and inventor Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford, to return to his home town. This never happened. The House is now referred to as The Count Rumford House.

Did you know -- The Winn Memorial Library, also known as The Woburn Public Library, is also a national historic landmark. This library was designed in 1879 by American Architect H.H. Richardson. The library was the first of Richardson’s series of library designs and in it he established characteristic, asymmetrical plan for such buildings: an entrance and reception, usually with staircase tower, the reading rooms with stacks; and an art gallery. The statute on the front lawn is the native son and notable scientist Sir Benjamin Thompson, Count Rumford.

Did you know -- Charles Goodyear “vulcanized” rubber on Montvale Avenue in Woburn. He was very slow in filing paperwork for the credit of all his inventions, but eventually the Goodyear Tire was named in his honor.
